Walmart taking iPhone 5 pre-orders Friday morning, cheaper than competitors

Walmart will be taking pre-orders for the iPhone 5 at its US stores from Friday morning – for a price that undercuts its competitors.

Following the unveiling of the latest iPhone in San Francisco on Wednesday, it’s possible many owners of the 4S are already looking at their device like it belongs in a museum. It’s a safe bet many will be chomping at the bit to rid themselves of their ‘ancient’ handset in favor of the new one, with its bigger screen and faster processor.

If you happen to be one of these people, or if your current phone is on its last legs and the iPhone 5 seems like a fine replacement, you may be interested to know that Walmart will be taking pre-orders for the new handset at its US stores from Friday morning – for a price that undercuts its competitors.

The retail giant is offering the 16GB version of Apple’s new phone with a $189.97 price tag, as part of a two-year contract. Meanwhile, Apple, AT&T and Verizon will be selling the same phone for 10 bucks more – $199. Walmart’s prices for the 32GB and 64GB versions aren’t known.

Those choosing to buy the new handset from the store are asked to pre-order in person. In return for a $25 deposit, you’ll be given a reservation card, needed for when you collect the phone a week later.

Walmart is also slashing the price of the old iPhone 4S from $148 to $89.97, with a two-year contract. Even cheaper is the iPhone 4, going for just 97 cents with a two-year contract. That’s down from $48.88. If the iPhone 5 seems a little on the pricey side but you’d still like to bag yourself an iPhone, you have choices.

Many analysts believe sales of the Cupertino company’s new smartphone will break all records, selling 10 million units even before the end of the month. The iPhone revolutionzed the handset market when it burst onto the scene in 2007, and in the intervening years has sold a staggering 244 million units.

Users upgrading from an earlier iteration to the new model will gain a lighter, slimmer device with a larger screen, a faster processor, 4G LTE compatibility, and a better camera.

It’ll be available for pick-up on September 21.

Nintendo: Baseline Wii U game price will be $59.99

nintendo wii u game cost

Nintendo is abandoning the $49.99 price point that made the original Wii so attractive in favor of a Wii U game price of $59.99.

When Nintendo released the Wii in 2006, $250 got you the machine, one Wii remote, a “nunchuck” attachment, and a copy of Wii Sports. It was a bargain in comparison to Microsoft’s Xbox 360 which ran $400 for the model with an adequate hard drive. It was practically free in comparison to the PlayStation 3 that retailed at either $500 or $600 depending on the model. The low cost of the machine wasn’t the only secret to its success though. It was also the games. PS3 and 360 games cost $60 standard, but Wii games were just $50. Games for older hardware cost less to make, thus the lower price.

Nintendo won’t be able to replicate that magic with Wii U. Contrary to early speculation, Wii U games will retail for $59.99.

Retailers Amazon and GameStop on Thursday posted pre-order pages for Wii U games, both Nintendo published titles like New Super Mario Bros. U and third-party games like Ubisoft’s ZombiU, that will cost $59.99. A Nintendo representative in turn confirmed for Polygon that $59.99 is the “baseline price” though “specific games could be more or less.”

For the next 12 months, this pricing model will be acceptable to most consumers as Wii U is technologically comparable to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. That said, Wii U games are technologically comparable to games from 2005, and while HD productions were monumentally expensive to produce at the time—and they very much still are—production costs have lowered somewhat in that time. When Xbox 720 and PlayStation 3 games retail for $59.99, Nintendo and its publishing partners will have to swiftly reconsider this price structure.

There is another logic at work in Nintendo’s game pricing. It has to raise prices on retail games to mollify chains like Walmart, Best Buy, and GameStop who will now compete with Nintendo more directly. Nintendo has promised that first-party games will be available on Wii U as digital downloads simultaneously with retail releases.

Nintendo was expected to maintain the Wii’s competitive $49.99 game pricing. Amazon listings for Wii U titles like Tekken Tag Tournament 2 and Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge appeared in May pricing the games at $49.99.

Nintendo Wii U coming to the US November 18 for $250 and $300

Nintendo announced yesterday that its next-gen game console will launch in Japan on December 8, with a basic and deluxe console available from 26,250 yen. Today, the company revealed that the US will receive the Wii U even earlier, as the system is set to hit shelves on November 18.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata revealed in a pre-recorded video streamed online yesterday that both consoles will have 2GB of RAM, which will be split in half for game memory and system memory. Games will load from a proprietary optical disc that can store up to 25GB of data and read at 22.5MB/s. It will consume a maximum of 75W, though Iwata said the average power consumption is around 40W.

Two versions will be available: the basic model in white will cost 26,250 yen in Japan and $249.99 in the US, while the deluxe in black will cost 31,500 yen and $349.99. Aside from the difference in color, both share the same hardware and only differ in storage -- the basic has 8GB and the deluxe has 32GB. The cheaper console comes bundled with a Wii U Gamepad, AC adapter and HDMI lead, while the pricier unit adds NintendoLand, a console stand, and a GamePad charging cradle.

The 6.2-inch touchscreen GamePad controllers will available to purchase separately complete with AC adapters, as will the two stands that ship with the deluxe model. Those that prefer to use traditional gamepads can purchase the Xbox 360-style Wii U Pro Controller or even reuse existing Wii Remotes and Nunchuks with the new console.

Two games were revealed during yesterday's announcement, New Super Mario Bros. priced at 5,985 yen and Nintendo Land for 4,935 yen. The press event this morning revealed more titles, including 007 Legends, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, NBA 2013, Wipeout 3 and more.

Nintendo also unveiled TVii, which is said to be "the most different non-gaming initiative Nintendo has ever introduced." Using the GamePad, users will be able to scan TV listings from YouTube, Netflix, Hulu Plus and Amazon Prime in addition to their DVR and live TV. Users can customize their view lists by adding favorite shows and they can even watch trailers. Nintendo TVii will be available in Canada and the US at no additional cost.

Isis mobile payment system delayed in trial cities

Isis mobile payment system delayed in trial cities

We're a little further from Isis' "near" field communication

Isis is more like "Is-not" in trial cities Salt Lake City, Utah and Austin, Texas. The NFC mobile payment system backed by Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile was supposed to roll out to these two locations by the end of the summer, but it is now delayed.

Saying that there's no one reason for the delay, Isis head of marketing Jaymee Johnson told FierceMobileContent, "I would characterize where we are as checking items off the punch list."

That checklist doesn't come with a definitive finish date, however. Johnson only said that the carrier-backed NFC venture will have more updates in October.

Making the point-of-sale for Isis

Despite the delay, Johnson still made the case for Isis as a leading point-of-sale contender. Hundreds of merchants in Salt Lake City and Austin are ready for the mobile wallet system to launch, he told FierceMobileContent.

Likewise, Isis has four leading payment networks waiting to go on the other end: JPMorgan Chase, Capital One, American Express and BarclayCard, according to its website.

Naturally, the Isis mobile wallet app will be compatible with yet-to-be-announced Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile devices. Sprint, not surprisingly, is the only major U.S. carrier missing from the "Isis Ready" carrier list, as it's not part of the joint venture.

Ensuring your mobile payments aren't available to everyone (i.e. thieves), Isis boasts a Wallet PIN for security and allows you to remotely suspend your account if your phone is stolen.

All of these features are available from Isis' NFC competition, Google Wallet, which launched one year ago this month. But the carrier-backed mobile payment system has time; Apple didn't jump on the NFC bandwagon with the iPhone 5 announcement.

Miiverse, Nintendo TVii, eShop: 3 mysteries still surrounding Nintendo Wii U

We know the price and release date but there are still big questions to be answered about Nintendo Wii U.

 wii u eshop

The months of anticipation are over! Now we know everything about Nintendo Wii U! It is naked before us, its gleaming touch screen visage bare in front of the world. We know the release date, we know the first party launch software line up, we know the cost, we know how many bundles there will be. Do we really though? Truth is, we know only the most basic facts about what Nintendo will have in store for the world on November 18th when the Wii U goes on sale. Here are just a few of the remaining mysteries surrounding the console:

* The eShop

The abysmal digital storefront from the Wii will be retired for Wii U, replaced with the familiar eShop branding. What we don’t know, however, is how it will actually work. What will happen to all those Virtual Console and WiiWare games purchased on Wii? A Nintendo representative told me in March that the official line is, “We are planning to make it possible to transfer the purchased contents from the Wii.” Things are no more specific today. Nintendo’s Bill Trinnen told GameLife the same thing but didn’t elaborate. It’s also unclear how Nintendo will finally embrace 20th century digital shopping standards and offer users a centralized account for easing the shopping process. There will be unified accounts between 3DS and Wii U, but are they tied to Miiverse?

* Miiverse

Speaking of Nintendo’s answer to the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live, the House of Mario still hasn’t clarified exactly what it is. Miiverse is a social network that will allow people to meet up, play games online with one another, and share information like Twitter-style messaging in game like New Super Mario Bros. U. President Satoru Iwata said that Nintendo will police Miiverse using both human moderators and security software to keep people from abusing others or even providing game spoilers. Specifics though—how accounts are actually set up, how friends lists will be maintained, etc.—are totally unknown. When will Nintendo fill in the public? “Soon,” said Nintendo America president Reggie Fils-Aime. With just 65 days to go before launch, Nintendo has little time to educate its audience.

* Nintendo TVii cable partners

Nintendo TVii is arguably the most attractive part of the whole Nintendo package. It offers the same access to services like Hulu Plus, Netflix, Amazon Instant Video that Sony does through PlayStation and Apple offers on all of its devices. Unlike those competitors, Nintendo TVii has what looks like a simple, intuitive user interface through the tablet controller. There are other streaming partners on board as well. ABC streaming was shown, as was CBS Sports. Nintendo also has the faded TiVO brand for its DVR service. Rumors suggest that Microsoft is partnering cable providers like Comcast and Time Warner to make the Xbox 720 the definitive cable set top box. Nintendo isn’t discussing how far it’s looking to penetrate the TV business. Yet.

First Look at iPhone 5 nanoSIM Cards

When the iPhone 4 was first introduced, it also introduced the new microSIM standard to the cell phone world. Several other smartphones have since followed suit, but Apple thought it could trim down even more useless plastic and thus the nanoSIM was born. Now with the iPhone 5 launching next week, we’re getting our first look at these smaller SIM cards.

You have to remember that only that gold-plated portion in the middle of your SIM card is actually serving any kind of real purpose. That’s the only part that gets you connected to your carrier, identifying your device to the network. It only makes sense that we should get rid of as much of the surrounding fodder as possible.

What we see here are the nanoSIMs that will be sold by Canadian carriers Rogers Wireless and Fido. They’ll both support the fast 4G LTE network, giving iPhone 5 users the ability to best utilize the “ultrafast wireless” in their new handset. The nanoSIM itself measures a measly 8.8 x 12.3mm, making it that much easier to drop and lose. Thankfully, it’ll stay safely stowed away inside your phone most of the time anyway. The other good news is that your new nanoSIM will be included with your iPhone 5 contract price. Interestingly, someone has commented that Telus is charging ten bucks for their nanoSIM.

The expectation is that future smartphones will likely adopt the nanoSIM standard too. That little bit of extra space can accommodate other more useful bits, like wireless radios, memory and bigger batteries.

Instagram updates mobile website: Are full profiles next?

instagram desktop app

Instagram has rolled out a new design to its mobile website to more closely match its full site's design, adding hope to the rumor that profile updates are next in line.

With the Instagram and Facebook deal finally approved by the Federal Trade Commission, Instagram has unveiled its latest update to its platform. Instagram’s mobile website will now sport a new look and feel that closely reflects what you’d find when viewing photos on Instagram from your desktop browser.

instagram mobile page update

Before this update, users have not been able to interact with the mobile pages on Instagram. But this update changes all that. The “Like” and comment buttons are now larger, making them easier to use. And at the top right hand corner of Instagram’s mobile pages, you’ll find an “Open in App” button which will open the same Instagram page that you’re currently browsing within the native app on your smartphone.

More importantly, it also provides more evidence to the rumor that Instagram has its sights set on porting the functionalities you’d find on its mobile app to the Web.

In June, Instagram silently rolled out a new update to user Web profiles incorporated interactive buttons for liking and commenting on photos. To its user’s disappointment, that update had not yet addressed the demand for a profile page and discovery features, despite the existence of such features on the mobile app.

But that could all change in the near future as the company is now officially a part of Facebook.

In July, web designer, Cole Reinke, noticed a curious feature when logged into his account on Instagram.com. Typically users signed into Instagram’s browser app can only edit their profile information, but Reinke’s account had a non-functional “View Profile” button that disappeared as quickly as it surfaced.

If it’s true that that Instagram was testing out a profile page for the Web, we’re hoping that the complete transition of converting Instagram’s native app to the Web will come in the next update, now that its mobile and desktop pages are now cohesive.

Bayonetta 2 announced as a Wii U exclusive

Bayonetta 2 announced as a Wii U exclusive

Platinum Games’ sequel to its wild hack n slash offering will be a Wii U exclusive.

Earlier today Nintendo planted its flag in the daily news cycle and demanded the attention of gaming fans everywhere by finally announcing the release date and price of the Wii U, as well as several other related reveals. During that announcement, one of the surprises of the show came when the discussion turned to games. For the first time Bayonetta 2 was confirmed, and it will be a Wii U exclusive.

bayonettaThe action-based hack n slash original, featuring a buxom young witch in a skin tight outfit, was a hit when it was released back in 2010 (or 2009 if you got a hold of the Japanese release), both commercially and critically. Some compared it to the Sony exclusive God of War, which was especially ironic as the PS3 version of Bayonetta was deemed far inferior to the Xbox 360 offering due to technical issues.

That is a complete non-issue for the sequel though, as the PS3 and Xbox 360 will be left on the outside looking in. This will actually be the second Wii U exclusive title for developer Platinum Games. The developer has been working on a Wii U launch title known as Project P-100, which at the Nintendo event was officially rebranded as The Wonderful 101. Although that game is not confirmed for a November 18 release to match the Wii U itself, it is scheduled to hit shelves before the end of the year.

No word yet on when we can expect Bayonetta 2. It almost certainly won’t make the launch window, which technically closes in March, but it is scheduled for 2013.

Nvidia GeForce GTX 650 also launched today for $109

Alongside today's launch of the $230 GeForce GTX 660, Nvidia introduced yet another variant intended for gamers on a tighter budget. Priced at just $109, the GTX 650 makes some sacrifices in the hardware front as it continues the process of filtering the Kepler architecture down into the lower levels of Nvidia’s current lineup. The card is meant to compete against AMD’s HD 7750 and 7770 in the entry level market.

The GeForce GTX 650 is essentially the GDDR5 version of the GeForce GT 640 introduced in June. It’s based on the same GK107 GPU with 384 cores, 16 ROPs and 32 texture units, but clocked at 1058MHz instead of 900MHz and sporting far more memory bandwidth than its DDR3-based sibling -- 80 GB/s versus 28.5 GB/s.

According to Nvidia’s own benchmarks using 3DMark Vantage, the GTX 650 is just a notch above the old GTX 550 Ti in terms of performance and should offer a 20% speed increase versus the GTS 450.

The company listed a TDP rating of 64W for the GTX 650 and is equipping the card with a single 6-pin PCIe power connector. Other than that you'll find two dual-link DVI output ports on the cards, but Nvidia decided to forego a full sized HDMI connector in favor of a mini-HDMI port. Board partners are free to tweak their cards beyond the reference Nvidia model so you can expect other connectivity and cooling options in the market.

Cricket gets first crack at prepaid iPhone 5 on Sept. 28

Cricket gets first crack at prepaid iPhone 5 on Sept. 28

Coming to a prepaid and regional carrier near you

While it didn't merit a mention at Wednesday's Apple media event, Leap Wireless subsidiary Cricket Communications announced that it too will get the new iPhone 5.

In a very brief press release issued Thursday, Cricket rushed to be the first to announce availability of a prepaid iPhone 5 beginning Friday, Sept. 28.

"Cricket Communications, a leading provider of innovative and value-driven wireless services, and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Leap Wireless International, Inc., today announced it will offer iPhone 5, the thinnest and lightest iPhone ever, to customers in select Cricket markets in the U.S. beginning Friday, Sept. 28," the release reads.

The press release did not reveal details on pricing or capacity, and a request for further information was not immediately returned.

Regional rollout

Cricket won't be alone in providing an alternative to the big three carriers where the iPhone 5 is concerned.

According to 9to5Mac, regional carriers will also add Apple's new handset on Sept.28.

Mississippi's C Spire and Alaska's GCI both announced the iPhone 5 on their respective websites, while Appalachian Wireless took to Facebook to spread the good news.

The trio of regional carriers promise iPhone 5 pricing will come soon.

Sprint’s HD Voice won’t work with iPhone 5

Sprint Logo

The iPhone 5 will support HD Voice, but not on Sprint's network, we've learned.

Full Coverage From Apple's 9/12 iPhone 5 Launch EventApple’s faster, lighter, and thinner, new iPhone 5 was unveiled yesterday. We learned that it supports 4G LTE and it will be released on Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T in the US.

We’re now hearing that there’s bad news for Sprint customers. Despite the fact that Sprint is the first U.S. carrier to embrace HD Voice, a new technology that enables much clearer phone calls over a cellular network, the iPhone 5 will not work with the carrier’s HD Voice service. Sprint spokesperson Michelle Leff Mermelstein told Phone Scoop that the iPhone 5 will not support Sprint’s version of the wideband audio technology. The reason is, of course, quite technical. A majority of carriers use WCDMA networks to improve the quality of speech audio on phones, but Sprint uses CDMA 1x Advanced technology, which isn’t compatible with Apple’s new flagship smartphone. Ever the stickler to streamline its manufacturing processes, Apple is not making a custom version of the iPhone 5 specifically for Sprint.

Out of the 240 carriers that will sell the iPhone 5 worldwide, only 20 of them currently support HD Voice and none of them are in the United States. AT&T and Verizon have no support for wideband audio right now, but it is expected soon.

HD Voice should take off alongside LTE networks and it will drastically increase the quality of call audio, but it’s likely to be 2013 before it sees widespread adoption stateside.
