BitTorrent launches file-delivery service SoShare, offers up to 1TB transfers for free

BitTorrent has announced the public beta launch of SoShare, a file delivery service that will take on the likes of YouSendIt, DropBox and others by allowing file transfers up to 1TB in size. The company says it is targeting creative professionals -- designers, photographers, musicians, and so on --  who handle large data files but have trouble sending them to others due to limitations with email attachments, syncing and delivery services.

SoShare is based on the BitTorrent protocol, as you’d expect, combined with cloud caching so recipients can access the files even when the sender is offline. As mentioned above, the service allows up to 1TB file transfers, regardless if that’s a single or multiple files. Copies of the files will be kept online on BitTorrent’s servers for up to 30 days, although you can set them to expire them sooner. Users need to install a browser plugin to upload or download files, but it’s not necessary to register in order to access shared files.

You can create both private and public links for your files to share them with others. BitTorrent says the service allows for distributed transfers, meaning the more people that have access to a file, the more the SoShare plug-in can help with the availability of bandwidth. Other common BitTorrent features are present like the ability to pause downloads and pick up where you left off later. SoShare also keeps track of delivery status, so you can be notified once your recipients finish downloading whatever you’re sending.

To get started, sign up at soshareit.com/signup, create an account, and install the SoShare plugin (~1.5MB) for Chrome, Firefox, Safari or Internet Explorer on Windows or OS X.

The service is still in an early testing stage and as such BitTorrent warns that you are bound to encounter a few bugs here and there. SoShare will remain absolutely free during its public beta test, but according to GigaOm the company may look at different options to monetize the service down the line.

Google might be plotting retail store roll out by the holidays

Google might be plotting retail store roll out by the holidays

Where we'll play with the next Nexus?

Google is reportedly taking a "build it and they will buy" approach to its products as a new rumor has the search engine giant and Android progenitor building its own standalone retail locations in the U.S. by year's end.

An "extremely reliable source" speaking with 9to5Google told the site that the first of Google's new stores will be ready for business by holiday season, 2013.

The first stores will be in major metropolitan areas with the express purpose of getting products like the next Google Nexus, Chrome and, most importantly, upcoming products into customers' hands.

Already Google runs Chrome store-within-store models at Best Buys and 50 PCWorld/Dixon's in the U.K., but the new stores will reportedly be completely independent with sales flowing directly from Google to customer.

Did Google Glass prod?

While having customers see, touch and interact with devices as a means to a sale is a retail model Apple perfected, it sounds like Google's inspiration for its own stores actually stemmed from Google Glass.

The product, though oft-talked about, would need to be met first hand by the public. What better way to do that than through conveniently located shops?

Furthermore, the stores would also provide a platform for other projects like driverless cars and mini-drone delivery systems to meet potential buyers.

Last year, an analyst told TechRadar that retail locations were a distinct possibility for Google in 2014-2015. Looks like Google may be moving ahead with its plans on a faster timetable.

Find the Nexus 4

The Nexus 4 would have a fine time selling at a Google store where customers could ask clerks point blank if the handset was in stock instead of learning from a "Sold Out" Google Play message.

Until we maybe one day get standalone shops, Google took some of the burden of tracking the uber-popular handset down for us by launching a Nexus 4 finder Thursday.

It's straightforward enough: type in your address and Google will find retail locations that have the handset within five, 10, 20 and 50 miles of your location. The idea is to check availability before heading in, though you'll actually have to phone ahead.

T-Mobile is the only official U.S. retailer at the moment, so you'll be seeing all T-Mo options when you search.

A company rep told us this wasn't the first time Google's created such a tool: Mountain View made one for the Nexus 7 that's still up and running.

Next Galaxy product will be a Smartwatch?

samsung smartwatch

I remember way back in the day when Casio calculator watches and even TV watches were what was considered “the in thing”, but the latest wave of Smartwatches make those devices look prehistoric. Rumors of an Apple iWatch have been doing the rounds of late and now it appears Samsung is jumping on the Smartwatch bandwagon with a Galaxy watch of its own.

The rumors of a Samsung Smartwatch kicked-off after alleged leaked images turned up on a Korean message board. According to reports the watch will be named the Galaxy Altius and will feature on-board storage, its own AltiusOS and will sport a 500 x 500 resolution display.

Could the Altius arrive in the middle of next month along with the Samsung Galaxy S4? Recently a rumor indicated that an S4, S4 Mini and third non-phone device were all in the works, could this be what the rumor was indicating?
